DTF vs Dye-Sublimation: Choosing a Textile Route

One bonds a film to the surface, the other dyes the fibre, and that decides your market

Dye-sublimation converts ink to gas and bonds it into polyester fibre, so the print has no hand feel and will not crack, but it only works on polyester and on light colours. DTF prints onto a film, bonds it with hot-melt powder and presses it onto almost any fabric including cotton and dark garments. The fabric your customers buy decides which route you take.

The two processes, described properly

Dye-sublimation prints with disperse dyes, either onto transfer paper that is then pressed against the fabric, or directly onto the fabric before it passes through a calender. Under heat and pressure the dye sublimates, moving from solid to gas without going liquid, and enters the polyester fibre. Once it cools it is inside the fibre. There is no layer sitting on top.

DTF prints pigment ink onto a coated PET film. While the ink is still wet, a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied, and the film is cured so the powder melts into the ink layer. The film is then heat pressed onto the garment and peeled away, leaving the printed layer bonded on the surface of the fabric.

The distinction sounds academic until you hold both. A sublimated shirt feels like an unprinted shirt. A DTF shirt has a print you can feel with your fingertip.

What each one can and cannot print on

This is where most buying decisions are actually made.

Dye-sublimation needs polyester, or a polyester-rich blend, and it needs the substrate to be white or very light. The dye is transparent and there is no white ink in the process, so the colour of the fabric shows through everything you print. On cotton the dye has nothing to bond with, sits on the surface and washes out. On a 50/50 blend you get a faded result, which some brands actually sell deliberately as a vintage look, but it is not a colour-accurate one.

DTF does not care what the fabric is made of, because it is bonding an adhesive layer rather than dyeing a fibre. Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon and canvas all work. It prints white underbase, so dark garments are straightforward. That single capability opens the entire cotton T-shirt market, which in South Africa is a large share of promotional and event work.

Where dye-sublimation is clearly the right answer

Soft signage and display graphics. Flags, banners, backdrops, exhibition walls, tension fabric frames and stretched wall panels are polyester by definition and are printed at width. This is the volume application, and it is where the HP Stitch platform sits, with the S500 at 64 inches and the S1000 at 126 inches for superwide work.

All-over garment printing. If the design runs to the seams, sublimation is the only practical route, because there is no film edge and no panel boundary.

Sportswear, cut and sew. Panels are printed flat, then cut and sewn into the garment, which gives full-bleed decoration with no added weight or stiffness.

Homeware and hard substrates. Polyester-coated rigid items sublimate well and carry good margin.

Where DTF is clearly the right answer

Short-run garment decoration on mixed stock. A customer brings you fifteen cotton shirts in assorted colours and wants them next week. Sublimation cannot do it. DTF can, and can do it without screens, without setup and without minimum quantities.

Dark garments. The white underbase makes this routine.

Mixed fabric orders. Uniform work in particular tends to arrive as a mix of cotton polos, polyester jackets and canvas caps, and one DTF workflow handles the lot.

Gang-printed transfers. You can print a full sheet of different designs, cut them apart and press them as orders come in, which suits a shop selling to many small customers.

The honest trade-offs

Neither process is without cost.

DTF adds hand feel, and heavy coverage on a lightweight shirt can feel stiff and plasticky. Washing durability is good when the powder is properly cured and the press is properly calibrated, and poor when either is not, so process discipline matters more than in sublimation. The powder stage is messy and needs extraction or a closed shaker unit. Film and powder are ongoing consumables with real cost per print.

Dye-sublimation is restricted to polyester and light colours, which is a hard limit and not a preference. Colour management is more demanding because what comes off the printer looks nothing like the finished result until it has been pressed. Direct-to-fabric work needs a calender and space for it, and transfer paper adds a consumable and a waste stream.

Colour management on textile is its own discipline

This catches signage shops moving into textile more than anything else.

On a sublimation printer the ink laid on transfer paper is dull and wrong. Colour only appears after the press, and it shifts with press temperature, dwell time, pressure and the fabric itself. The same file on the same printer will land differently on a 110 gram flag fabric and a heavy blockout banner. That means you cannot proof by eye off the printer. You need measured profiles per fabric and a repeatable press routine, and you need to record both.

The HP Stitch platform addresses part of this with a built-in spectrophotometer, which makes profiling and consistency checks a routine operation rather than a specialist exercise. That is worth weighing if you do not already have a colour-managed workflow and a trained operator.

DTF has a related but simpler problem. The white underbase choke and density determine whether colours look clean or muddy against the garment, and getting that wrong is the most common reason a DTF print looks amateur. It is a RIP setting, not a printer fault, and it is learnable in an afternoon with the right guidance.

In both cases, budget for a spectrophotometer, profiling and operator training as part of the project rather than as an afterthought. A textile printer producing inconsistent colour between reorders will lose the customers that matter most, which are the ones who reorder.

Deciding for your shop

Start with your last hundred orders rather than with the equipment. Count how many were polyester, how many were cotton, how many were dark, and how many were large format soft signage rather than garments. If soft signage and sportswear dominate, dye-sublimation is your machine and the width question is the only real debate. If garment decoration on assorted customer-supplied stock dominates, DTF is your machine and the question is capacity.

A fair number of shops end up running both, and that is not indecision. They serve different markets with different economics. Sublimation is a square-metre business with wide-format throughput. DTF is a per-garment business with high mix and low run length.

If you are adding textile to an existing signage operation, the transition is usually easier on the sublimation side, because the workflow, the RIP, the width and the square-metre pricing model all resemble what you already do. Adding DTF means learning garment handling, press calibration and a different kind of customer.

Can you use dye-sublimation on cotton?

No, not durably. Sublimation dye bonds to polyester fibre. On cotton it sits on the surface and washes out within a few cycles. Cotton garments need DTF, direct-to-garment or screen printing. Polyester-rich blends give faded results rather than accurate colour.

Does DTF printing work on dark garments?

Yes. DTF prints a white underbase beneath the colour layer, so the garment colour does not show through. This is one of its main advantages over dye-sublimation, which has no white ink and therefore cannot print onto dark or coloured fabric at all.

Which lasts longer in the wash, DTF or sublimation?

Sublimation is generally more durable because the dye is inside the fibre and cannot crack or peel. DTF durability is good when the adhesive powder is fully cured and the press is correctly calibrated for time, temperature and pressure, and noticeably worse when it is not.

Do I need a calender for dye-sublimation?

For roll-fed soft signage and direct-to-fabric work, yes. A flatbed heat press handles cut pieces and garments, but continuous fabric needs a calender to apply even heat and pressure across a moving roll. Budget the calender and its floor space with the printer.
