Vehicle Wrap Printing: The Equipment Checklist

Everything between the artwork and a wrapped bakkie, and what each item is for

A working wrap shop needs six things: a wide-format printer, a laminator, a cutter, a colour-managed RIP, the correct cast film, and a clean, controlled install bay. Every one of them affects how the wrap looks after a year on a Gauteng highway. Most wrap failures trace back to a missing or under-specified item on that list rather than to the installer.

The printer

Width first. A 1.6 metre machine covers the overwhelming majority of vehicle panels and is the standard wrap shop size. Wider machines exist and are useful for bus and truck work, but they cost more across the whole chain because the laminator and the cutter have to match.

Ink chemistry matters more for wraps than for almost any other application. Latex prints are dry off the printer and can be laminated immediately, which removes the outgassing day from your schedule. Eco-solvent prints need to sit for 12 to 48 hours before lamination, and laminating early is one of the classic causes of bubbles appearing under the film weeks after the vehicle has been collected.

White ink is worth a thought if you intend to sell window and partial wraps on clear film, or graphics onto dark base wraps.

Throughput is the other specification to be realistic about. A wrap panel printed in a high-quality mode takes considerably longer than the draft-mode figure on a datasheet, and wrap work is exactly where you cannot afford banding or weak solid coverage. Ask for the square metres per hour in the print mode you would actually sell wraps in, then work out how many vehicles a day that supports alongside lamination and cutting. Shops routinely discover that the printer was never the bottleneck and the laminator was.

The laminator

This is the item new shops under-buy, and it is the one that most directly protects the wrap.

Laminate is not decoration. It carries the UV protection, the abrasion resistance and the stretch behaviour of the finished film. An unlaminated wrap on a vehicle in South African sun will fade and scuff, and the print surface will not survive installation squeegee work or later washing.

Specify a laminator wide enough for your printer, with heat assist if you intend to run cast overlaminates properly, and with tension control good enough to laminate a three metre panel without silvering or wrinkles. Kala and Mefu machines cover the range from occasional to production use. The cheapest laminator that fits your printer width is usually the wrong choice, because slow, inconsistent lamination becomes the bottleneck for the whole shop.

The cutter

You need contour cutting for panels, and a roll cutter with reliable optical registration is the standard answer. Summa machines are common in this role, with drag-knife models for standard film and tangential models where reflective and thicker material are regular.

A print-and-cut machine combines the two and saves floor space, which suits a smaller shop. Once you are busy enough that the printer should never stop, separate units let you print and cut in parallel.

Whichever you choose, check registration on laminated material. Lamination puts the film under tension and can shift dimensions slightly, which is exactly the condition your cutter will face on every wrap job.

RIP and colour management

Fleet work is brand work, and brand work is colour work. If a national fleet has a specified corporate colour, you will be matching it across vehicles, across reprints and across months.

You need a RIP that handles spot colour definitions properly, tiling and panelling for large surfaces, and nesting to control media waste. You need a spectrophotometer and profiles for each film and laminate combination you sell. Caldera, ONYX and SAi all serve this market; the right one depends on your workflow and what your operators already know.

The discipline that saves money: profile the film and laminate together, because the overlaminate changes the appearance of what is underneath it.

Media, and the cast versus calendered decision

This is the single most consequential material choice in wrapping.

Cast film is manufactured in a way that leaves it effectively stress-free, so it conforms into rivets, deep channels and compound curves and stays there. Calendered film is produced under tension and retains some of that stress, so when it is heated and stretched around a curve it tends to try to recover and pull back, which shows up as edge lift at the exact places you least want it.

Use cast for full wraps, for any vehicle with rivets, corrugations or complex curves, and for anything you are warranting for years. Calendered is acceptable for flat panels, short-term promotional graphics and simple box-body sides where cost matters more than conformability. Using calendered film on a curved full wrap to win a quote is the most expensive saving in the trade.

The install bay and the hand tools

A wrap does not survive a dusty, cold, badly lit workshop.

You need an enclosed bay, clean and dust controlled, with even light so the installer can see defects. Temperature control matters because film and adhesive behave differently when cold, and a Highveld winter morning is genuinely cold. You need a proper wash and degrease area, because adhesion failures almost always begin with surface preparation.

Hand tools are cheap relative to everything else and there is no reason to skimp: quality squeegees with replaceable felt edges, a heat gun and an infrared thermometer to post-heat at the correct temperature, magnets, knifeless tape, snap blades, and a stock of primers and edge sealer for the recesses that need them.

Where wrap shops actually lose money

Three failures come up repeatedly.

Skipping post-heat. Film that has been stretched into a recess needs to be heated to the manufacturer's specified temperature so it loses its memory. Guessing by feel instead of measuring with an infrared thermometer is why edges lift three weeks later.

Poor surface preparation. Wax, silicone and road film defeat even the best adhesive. A proper degrease routine, plus primer where the manufacturer calls for it, prevents most recall work.

Under-quoting the labour. Printing a wrap takes an hour. Installing it properly takes a day or more, and removing an old wrap can take longer than applying the new one. Price removal separately and honestly.

There is a fourth failure worth naming: accepting artwork without checking it. A logo supplied as a low-resolution raster, a corporate colour given as an RGB value with no reference, or a design that runs a critical element straight across a door shut line will all produce a wrap the customer is unhappy with even when your printing is perfect. Build an artwork acceptance step into the job, get the vehicle template right for the exact model and body shape, and have the customer sign off a proof that shows where the design falls on the panels. Fleet customers in particular will hold you to consistency across twenty vehicles, and that is won at the artwork stage rather than in the bay.

Keep records too. Note the film batch, the laminate, the print mode and the profile used for every fleet job. When the same customer orders three more vehicles in eight months, that record is the difference between a match and an argument.
